Freedom Curls

I washed my hair today because I'm going to TX this weekend (and it really needed washing).  I'm going to see my in-laws and there are a bunch of family festivities planned for the holiday (including a wedding).  I bought a sundress from Old Navy and I'm ready to chill!!  I need a break bad!!  So I washed with my Dr. Bronner's peppermint shampoo (with an ACV rinse, of course) and I used my favorite conditioner.

Me and my husband LOVE this stuff!  I'm glad it comes in single use packets because he would use it all up in one setting.  It's cheap at the beauty supply store and even cheaper at Walgreens.  But it took me FOREVER to wash this stuff out this time.  I had to rinse 3 times to get it all out!!  Anyway, I rolled my hair with the pipe cleaners so I can have some 'freedom curls' for the weekend.   :)

I bought some Mega-Tek online (for my busted hairline) and it should be here by the time I get back from my trip.  I can't wait to try it out so I can tell y'all about it. :)

Til next time, be blessed and have a safe and Happy Independence Day!!

BFF update

So my BFF Kenya is loving her twist outs.  She sent me this picture last night.   She said she is channeling Diana Ross.  LOL!  I love it!
*This a twist out that is 5 days old.

Busted hairline

Yall, my hairline is busted!  I noticed it was thinning there awhile ago but it was really noticeable the other day.  I'm kinda upset about it but I don't know what to do.  Any suggestions?

Do you see the remains of my widow's peak?

What the French Toast?!

This looks really bad! :(

A small bald spot.

Yall what I am gonna do?!  I haven't worn my hair in ponytails a lot lately so my hair is not being pulled.  I can't wear them long anyway cuz they make my head hurt.  I've only worn a style a few times in the past month and when I did, I didn't keep them long (headaches).  Maybe it's due to stress?  I got a few things going on in my life that might be causing a tad bit of stress.  :(  I've got to relax, relate, release.  LOL.

Anyway, I'm open to suggestions on what to do (if anything) about this disappearing hairline.

Til next time, thanks for reading.  Be blessed.

Spring style revisited

It's been 100 degrees outside the past few days. Entirely too hot to have hair all over the place, so I did my hair in a style today.  I was watching youtube last night and Chesaleigh has finally posted another loc video, so I decided to try it.  Simple and cute. Here are pictures:

As I was taking these pictures, I realized that I've done this exact style already!!.  But it didn't turn out this nice.  Check out the previous hot mess here!  (I'm so ashamed I even posted that).  So thanks Chesaleigh for doing a tutorial for me!! Here's another shot of the back:

So watch the tutorial  to learn how to do this style.

I am so blessed to have 30 followers.  I wish I had something to give away.  ;)
Anyway, til next time, be blessed.

FEATURE: My BFF is going natural!!!

This is my best friend, Kenya.  My ride or die chick.  She is currently transitioning.  Lately, she's been wearing her hair in a two strand twistout to hide the 2 different textures.  Isn't she beautiful?!
She says her natural hair texture is like Pretty Dimples from youtube.  I love her videos.  Anyway, I asked Kenya to answer some questions for me about her natural journey so far:

When was your last relaxer?
December 2009

What made you decide to go natural?
Perming my hair takes too much time if I do it myself and it's not in my budget to get my hair done (professionally).  *I would like to think I had a little something to do with it because she saw me get excited about my hair and become obsessed watching youtube videos.*

What is your routine?I wash once a week with Shea Moisture shampoo (the brillant curls) and will either set it with flexi rods or two strand twists.  I'm loving the two strand twist out right now.

What products are you using?
Shea Moisture products for curls, including the Curl Enhancer Shampoo.  I also use Elasticity Leave in conditioner and Cantu oil moisturizer. *These products are found at Wal-mart and Target.

Are you going to do a big chop?  If so, when?
No.
Why not?
Because I want the length.  I will gradually cut the permed ends off to maintain the length.

What styles are you looking forward to trying?
Pretty much any style that doesn't require a lot of time to do, low maintenance, and little to no dryer time.  *She's very low maintenance like me.  That's why we're besties. ;)

Who is favorite youtuber?
Spicyeve.  Her name is Evelyn and she's a vlogger on NaturallyCurly.com and also uses the name Kinks n' all.

What are your favorite blogs and/or websites for natural hair?
Your blog is my favorite *of course* and my favorite websites are NaturallyCurly.com and CurlyNikki.com.  *I like Curly Nikki myself.*

So there's Kenya.  I plan to feature her younger sister who has been natural for some time now.  She plans to lock her hair soon.  Yay!!  So show my girl some love and stay tuned for other features.

Til next time, thanks for reading.  Be blessed.

Summer Updo

I went out with my best friend tonight.  We usually hang out once a month, eating, drinking, and catching up (even though we talk almost every day).  Good times.  I've been wearing my hair down and straight for the past 2 weeks now, which is different for me.  Normally, it would have been in a ponytail by now.  It's hot outside!!  Anyway, I decided to do a style.  This is what I came up with:

Basket weave in the front and back and a high bun.  I added a cute loc tie for some flavor.
I've had that loc tie for awhile now but this is my first time wearing it.  I purchased it online at Lona's Original Creations.  I love it.   I have an outdoor wedding to attend next month and I'm thinking of wearing my hair like this.  This style would be gorgeous with a cute sundress!!

Do you have a summer updo style?

Coming soon: a feature on my best friend who is transitioning.

Til next time, thanks for reading.  Be blessed.

Honey Dip's Q & A 2010

How long have you been growing your locs?
It's been 7 years as of May 29, 2010.

Why did you decide to go natural?
I was tired of the chemicals burning my scalp and leaving scabs in my hair.  I was tired of spending the money to keep my hair straight.  And I was definitely tired of sitting in the beauty shop all day waiting on stylists who were over booked.

What made you decide to grow locs instead of wearing loose naps?
I've always been a low maintenance kind of girl.  I would rather sleep in instead of getting up earlier to put on make-up or comb hair. I've never worn make-up; just lip gloss.  When I had a perm, I wore low maintenance styles like wraps, ponytails, or anything I didn't have to do a whole lot to.  I also wore a lot of box braids, micro braids, and cornrows.  Locs provide me the opportunity to just get up and go.

How often do you retwist your roots?
It really just depends on how I feel, but it's usually every 8-12 weeks on average.  Sometimes, I'll just twist a few of the front rows.

Do you maintain your hair yourself or do you go to a loctician?
For the past year I have maintained my hair myself.  I stopped going to the salon last year because the work was becoming subpar and it didn't last very long.  I hated sitting in the shop and under the dryer (and spending the money) so I haven't been since April 2009.  I used to go every 2-3 months.  But self maintenance is nothing new for me.  I maintained my hair for the first 2 years before I started going to the beauty salon.  I only started going because my hair was getting longer and I was tired of doing it.  But now I enjoy doing my hair.

What is your maintenance routine?
Recently, I've been doing a daily spritz of water, glycerin, and lemongrass oil.  I really like how it keeps my hair looking (and feeling) soft and shiny and not dry.  I use ORS Scalp Cleanser once a week (or more if necessary) to keep my scalp fresh.  I wash every 2-3 weeks depending on how I feel.  When I wash, I brush my locs right before to loosen any flakes and lint.  I wash with black soap and/or peppermint castile soap, then rinse with ACV and oil.  When I condition, I use a tingling conditioner that I let stay on at least 30 minutes (but usually an hour).

What is your favorite product?
Dr. Miracle's Tingling Intensive Deep Conditioning Treatment.  I love the tingling sensation of this conditioner and it's not too hard to rinse out.  It comes in single use packets and it's not too expensive.  (See the side bar for other products I use regularly).

What were your family's and friends' reactions to your hair when you first started locking?
My friends were very positive and supportive.  I've always been different and tried different things so no one was really surprised.  My family, mainly my mother and grandmother, were a little skeptical.  They wanted to know why I would do such a thing and would I be able to get a job with my hair looking 'such a mess.'   Seven years later and my grandmother still doesn't understand the process and always asks when I'm going to 'take my hair down.'  My mother is used to it now and usually doesn't comment on it unless it's time for a retwist.  Other people in my family really never commented and weren't really surprised.

What was the most difficult stage of your locking journey?  (from Nessa)
The most difficult stage for me was the very beginning simply because I didn't know what I was doing.  I didn't know what products to use or what to do and I didn't have a lot of support.  I didn't (and still don't) have any real life examples of women with locs in my area.

If you were to ever start your locs over, what would you do different with your second set?  (from Nessa)
Recently, I have thought a lot about starting a new set.  When I do, I want my hair to be longer when I start them.  I also want the locs to be thicker.  I think I might start them with two strand twists instead of coils the next time.  I may start them over when I've had this set for 10 years or when they get to breast length.  We'll see.

What do you love the most about your locs? Now that you are 7 years locked, are there any changes as far as how you maintain your hair and how you feel about your locs overall?  (from Nessa)
My favorite thing is that I can style them just like permed hair.  And most people don't realize I have locs until they get up close to me.  They're usually amazed at the styles I wear and the versatility of my hair. I also love that I can get my hair wet and it's not 'ruined.'  And I really love being able to just get up and go.  It's not necessary to wear a style if I don't want to or don't have time.
As far as maintenance goes, I've been looking into more natural products lately.  I was a product junkie in the beginning simply because I was trying to find out what worked for me.  And right now, I love my locs.  I think I've gone through the "I hate my locs" stage twice.  Of course, the 1st time was when it was short and in the 'ugly' phase.  The 2nd time was a couple of years ago when I wanted to do something different so I cut them shorter into a bob.  I enjoyed it then but I regret that now because I wish my hair was longer.

It's so long!! (that's what she said) LOL

I haven't worn my hair straight and/or down in a few months so I'm not used to all this hair down my back.  It was this long (or a little longer) before I cut it the first time about 2 years ago.  When it's straight, I usually wear a pony ALL the time.  I'm trying to get out of that and style it more.  So since I've retwisted it on Sunday, I've been wearing it down.  And it looks very nice if I do say so myself.  But. . . . it's hot y'all.  I'm loving my length but I'm hot.  I will probably be rocking curls next week so my hair is not on my neck.  Which leads me to ask. . .

How do you style your hair for the summer?

I talked to the bestie and her sister and they want to be featured here.  Yay!!  I will catch up with them soon and share their stories with you.  My son, on the other hand, seems to be freeforming, cuz he does not want me to do anything to his hair.  It hasn't been twisted since the end of January.  It doesn't look bad so I'm not tripping.  I'll at least get some pictures and tell his story.

Til next time, thanks for reading.  Be blessed.
