FEATURE: Introducing Mop Head

I would like to introduce to you, my son, known to his classmates as Mop Head.  (I personally don't like the name but hey).

He's a 12 year old 7th grader who loves to skateboard and play video games.  He also plays soccer and baseball.  And the ladies love him and his hair. ;)

He likes to wear his hair in his face like the white boys are doing these days.
Yes, that is his natural hair color.  Don't you just love it?!

He has become a freeformer lately.  I haven't twisted his hair since January.  I have mixed feelings about it.  I personally don't like it because I prefer a more manicured look but I really don't like doing his hair either.  And he doesn't like me messing with it.  It takes FOREVER to do his hair because he won't sit still and he's a little tender headed.  It only takes me an hour to twist my husband's hair but it takes at least 2 hours to do my son's.  But I'm not tripping about it because it doesn't look bad.  He washes his hair himself at least once a week with whatever shampoo is available.  He doesn't have any hair or scalp issues, which is a blessing, so I don't have to do anything special to his hair.  So we agreed to let it do whatever as long as he keeps it clean.  I may just twist it once or twice a year.

I washed it this morning with some Suave shampoo that I got on clearance for 79 cents.  Rosemary mint.  It smells SO good.
His hair is super duper thick and he finally let me separate the locs so they won't grow together into one big mess.  I love the texture of his hair which makes it very easy to lock. The color is natural.  He was born with a head full of these brown kinky curls!

It does look like a mop head, doesn't it?!

I did an ACV rinse with oil after I washed.  No conditioner.  I didn't want to put any conditioner in his hair (and I usually don't) because I think it will be hard to wash out.  Now his hair is nice and shiny.  It usually looks dry.  I'm going to make him a water/glycerin/oil spritz to keep it moisturized.

When I separated the locs, I had to use scissors cuz his hair is meshing together like this:
It took me 30-45 minutes to do his whole head.  (and that's actually a water droplet in his hair and not lint)

This is actually his second set of locs and they will be 3 years old in August.  The first set was started when he was just 2 years old.  He wanted them cut when he was 6 years old because he hated that people said he looked like a girl.  I was glad he cut them because he didn't want me to maintain them and it looked a hot mess.  I had to try to do his hair when he was asleep.  Not fun.  So he wore it almost bald or short for a couple years before he decided on another set.  People still think he looks like a girl but he doesn't let it bother him anymore.   I told him to let the haters hate.

So that's my son.  Isn't he handsome?!

Til next time, thanks for reading.  Be blessed.

  6. You two look like twins...he's beautiful! ;-)

It's funny you mentioned the Rosemary Mint shampoo. I just received my coupon for a free bottle today and chose the same scent! Isn't it delish? *yum* I'm off to do my review on it.

Your son's hair reminds me of mine. Since he washes it himself once a week anyway, and neither of you particularly enjoys retwisting, perhaps you could just teach him to separate after every wash? You know, so they don't join and become painful to separate. That'sll also keep it looking a bit more "tame," since you prefer a neater look.

  7. I was going to suggest the same thing that nappy headed black girl said, i think as long as he separates them after every wash they shouldn't stick together too much.

I love my twin! He is my little soldier. We have been through so much together. And he actually looks like his daddy.

Anyway, @Nappy: it's funny that his hair reminds you of yours because when I was explaining freefroming to him, I mentioned you. ;)
