Mr. Sassafras Update

It's been almost 8 months since I introduced you to my husband, Mr. Sassafras.   I maintain his hair for him at least once a month.

March 2010                                                                      November 2010

This is the routine we usually do (which is pretty much the same as 8 months ago):
  • He washes his hair a few days before he wants it retwisted.  This tends to help with his dry, itchy scalp.
  • A few days later when he's ready for a retwist, I brush his scalp then do a baking soda scalp scrub.
  • We shampoo with whatever his shampoo of the  month is. We've tried a dandruff shampoo, Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap, Suave Rosemary Mint, and a mixture of all them. Then I rinse with ACV.
  • Next is Dr. Miracle's Tingling Conditioner.  Rinse then retwist with ORS Lock and Twist Gel.
This routine is working well for both of  us because I get to take care of him and his scalp.  His scalp is itchy and flaky and the brushing and baking soda scrub really keeps it in check.  And his hair looks nice and healthy.  We didn't think to take pictures of the back last time but you can still see the growth.

What's so funny?!
Now ladies, don't get too excited.

HE'S MINE!!

New Journey = New Blog

Because I'm starting a new journey, I feel it's necessary to start a new blog.  I would LOVE for my current followers to join me at Honey Dipped Napps.  I understand that most of my followers are loc wearers and may not be interested in my loose nappy journey.  That is why I'm starting anew.  I hope you join me there. Either way, this blog will not be deleted but it won't be updated as often.  The next few posts will be posted on both sites so you won't miss anything. So follow me over to Honey Dipped Napps at http://honeydippednapps.blogspot.com/.

Girls Nite Creation

So me and the bestie got together last Saturday. We did our usual eating and drinking but this time we did some mixing.  We made a hair and body butter.  I got the idea from watching several ladies on youtube.

We mixed shea butter, coconut oil, aloe vera gel, tea tree oil, and lemongrass oil.  I think there's some olive oil in there too.  We wrote the recipe down but I have misplaced it.  Anyway, it came out so nice and creamy.  It made enough for two 10 oz jars so we both got plenty.

It smells good too!

And it's light and easily absorbed by skin and hair.
My hair LOVES it!  I've been using it all week.  Just a dab will do ya.
My bestie's hair not so much but her skin loves it.
We're thinking her hair may like it when she's done transitioning.

So I don't see myself becoming a product junkie because I can make my own products (I also have hair gel to use).  I think I will be more of an accessory junkie.  I'm into big earrings and hair accessories and I'm looking into making my own.

I've been having fun with my hair this week.  I plan to post more in the next week when I have time about what's going on my way.  I also told you I had a surprise coming soon and that will be revealed in the next week as well.  So. . .

You need to pick yo AFRO daddy (because it's flat on one side)

So the wait is over y'all.  I'm done picking out all of my locs!  I started at 8:45 am yesterday and finished at 1:00 pm yesterday.  Pure excitement followed!!

My afro is far from flat!!
Unofficial  twist out
This is right after I finished the last loc and untwisted my hair
but right before I washed it.
Cute already, huh?

The shrunken fro.
After shampoo.  I LOVE IT!!!
Especially the color in the back.

New conditioner.  Hopefully it will does what is claims and
stimulates those follicles in the front so my hair can grow back.
And yes, it tingles like the other one I like. ;)

Hair shed from detangling.  Not a whole lot.
Probably because I detangled as I unlocked each loc.

Miss Celie twists for the night.
I will definitely be wearing a twist out the next day because I look real country!!

Great texture shot.  Nice back view.
End result.

This how I wore my hair to work today.  I didn't like it when I first undid my twists so I pulled it back a little and I was able to leave home with confidence.

So there you have it guys.  The locs are gone.  For now.  The question now is how long will I keep up with this maintenance of loose napps.  Stay tuned to find out.

Final comb out update

Ok, this is the final update before I show you my loose hair.   I have about 13 locs left.  I had to change up the way I wore my hair because the ponytail was too small.

So I got a little kofi hat (I think that's what it's called or is it a tam?) at the beauty supply store for $2.
It's soft and stretchy and served it's purpose well.
This is how I've worn my hair for the past 2 days, even to work.

Some people have asked about the amount of hair I'm losing or the shed hair.

This is how much hair is 'shed' from one loc.

This how much is 'shed' from the last 13 locs.

Cutting the locs has really sped up the process and I'm so mad I didn't do it sooner.

So stay tuned cuz it's almost time for the big reveal of my loose napps!!

Comb Out Update 3

I'm SO excited to report that I have 38 locs left!!!  I think I can be done this weekend.  I WANT to be done this weekend.   (I'm determined to be done this weekend!)  Y'all, I have been on a mission this week.

This is what I'm left with.  Just the middle.
Basically all of the outside perimeter has been picked out.

This is how I've been wearing it all this week.
Up close, it's looks a hot mess!
But from a distance, it's cute and most folks haven't noticed what I'm doing.

Look at my half 'fro, y'all!!
This was Monday night when I finished combing out the front 2 rows.
The length is actually almost twice as long as what you see here.
My hair is like a spring; it coils right back after it's been stretched.
I LOVE IT!!!!
I can't wait til I can do this all over.

A close up of the texture.  Pure nappiness!!

The twists I put in the front.

I cannot contain my excitement!! I have shown everybody who will look (and listen) about my hair.  Don't be surprised if I come back Sunday or Monday with all the locs gone.  What has helped me speed through is the fact that I'm cutting almost half of the loc off before I start picking it out.  I do that because I lose that much hair anyway so it doesn't make sense to waste time to comb that part out.  So as you can see, I am on a mission to finish this.  So stay tuned!

I also have a little surprise coming soon as well.

Comb out update 2.5

Since I just updated 3 days ago and I've out picked 12 locs, maybe, I'm calling this a half update.  But I have a lot to talk about.  Here goes:

So, as of today, I'm more than halfway done.  I have 60 locs left.  Last time I counted my full head of locs, I had about 145-160 locs.  I can't believe I've taken down that many but I guess I have.

Anyway, I washed my hair today cuz my scalp was a hot mess.  I'm embarrassed to tell you the last time I washed it.  So I did a simple wash, nothing special cuz I wanna save that for when I'm done with the task at hand.

This is the back.  I washed with the two strand twists still in.

Side views.  Notice how scalpy the front is compared to the back.

I've combed out the entire front row and let's just say, I'm not happy with what I noticed.
WTH is that, yall?!
The entire front area is thinner than the rest of my head.  I guess I have
the same thinness that a few of the women in my family have, including my mother.
I'm not happy.  I'm too young for this!!!

I was trying to do a flat twist across the front with the rest pulled back so I could look decent for my grandmother's 92nd birthday party.  I was disgusted when I saw that bald area. :(

But I worked something out, like I always do!!

I redid the twist.  I like this one better.

And I added a head band to hide the the thin area.
What do you think?

I wore it like this to the party but I don't think I'm gonna wear it to work.  I'm just not that happy with it.  I gotta figure out what to do about this area.  I haven't been using my Mega Tek as consistently as I was a few months ago so maybe I'll try that.  Any suggestions?

Til next time, thanks for reading.  Be blessed.

Comb Out Update 2

I think I have taken out about one third of my locs so far.

 Mostly in the back.

 Right side,

 and left side.
I have the middle and front left to do.

I'm hoping most of my loose hair is this length.  It's several different lengths all over but I'm hoping I can salvage most of this when I trim it.  I'm praying it's not a hot mess.  I think this a nice amount to work with.  I'm getting very excited about it.

You can tell that my locs are not as full as they used  to be.  I've been wearing it pulled back in a pony tail with a head band.

I kinda lost my pace because I had some work to do and a conference to attend and life so I've slowed down a bit.  I still think I can be done by Thanksgiving though.

I've been watching a LOT of loose naturals on youtube lately.  I've seen so many cute styles.  I think I've come up with a routine but I'm not sure what products I will use yet (other than my hair gel).  I know I'm gonna to shampoo my hair every 1-2 weeks on Sunday evenings.  I'm going to style it in a way that I can wear it all work week with little manipulation.  That's the plan.  We'll see how it works out.

On the other hand, I'm sad to see my locs go.  For the past 7 years, this is all I've known.  I've just recently learned to style them and now I'm letting them go.  :(  But I feel it's time for a new journey, however long it may be.  I'm going to give it at least 6 months before I lock back up (cuz I know I will go back to locs).  Pray for me yall and wish me luck.
